Heal

Heal is loosely inspired by the life and writings of Maya Angelou who is an incredible author, poet, and speaker. I’ve found myself deeply affected by her words several times in my life, even before I realized who she was. The grace she displayed in her work, facing constant opposition in life due to everything from her skin color to her powerful state of mind, ignites a longing in me to be more perceptive to the struggles that every human being faces. I could be sitting next to someone on the bus who carries with them an immensely complex mind and soul, and take them not only at face value. Whats so different or so similar about me and this stranger? What stories live on in their memories?

Heal Lyrics:

Who are you my friend
Burdened by your sin but not as much as your skin
A queer little black girl singing the gospel truth
Grows to be a woman and learns about misfortune

You ask of yourself, is it worth your life to love who you want
Are you the one thats so strange
Or is this damn world just deranged
Come stomp your pain into the ground

I stand with you, we are not few
We are the mistreated and abused
I’ll bear witness and shall not yield
Flat footed I’ve come to appeal
That you deserve to heal

Your mother nurtured the world
But it belonged to her son and not her little girl
Men have done you no favors
But to say that they’re godless you’re too full of grace to believe

They’ve beaten you down, tried taking what could not be took
You are just in your love and your rage
Singing out from the bars of your cage
Take flight from this merciless life

I stand with you, we are not few
We are the mistreated and abused
I’ll bear witness and shall not yield
Flat footed I’ve come to appeal
That you deserve to heal
