Heal

Heal is loosely inspired by the life and writings of Maya Angelou who is an incredible author, poet, and speaker. I’ve found myself deeply affected by her words several times in my life, even before I realized who she was. The grace she displayed in her work, facing constant opposition in life due to everything from her skin color to her powerful state of mind, ignites a longing in me to be more perceptive to the struggles that every human being faces. I could be sitting next to someone on the bus who carries with them an immensely complex mind and soul, and take them not only at face value. Whats so different or so similar about me and this stranger? What stories live on in their memories?

Heal Lyrics:

Who are you my friend
Burdened by your sin but not as much as your skin
A queer little black girl singing the gospel truth
Grows to be a woman and learns about misfortune

You ask of yourself, is it worth your life to love who you want
Are you the one thats so strange
Or is this damn world just deranged
Come stomp your pain into the ground

I stand with you, we are not few
We are the mistreated and abused
I’ll bear witness and shall not yield
Flat footed I’ve come to appeal
That you deserve to heal

Your mother nurtured the world
But it belonged to her son and not her little girl
Men have done you no favors
But to say that they’re godless you’re too full of grace to believe

They’ve beaten you down, tried taking what could not be took
You are just in your love and your rage
Singing out from the bars of your cage
Take flight from this merciless life

I stand with you, we are not few
We are the mistreated and abused
I’ll bear witness and shall not yield
Flat footed I’ve come to appeal
That you deserve to heal

Thaw

You Ripped my heart from my chest
And fashioned a fine pair of slippers
So with each step you tread on me
So tread lightly please
That penny jar won’t get you far
But you can hitch a ride with me
How could I know you, how could I not
You’re like something I forgot
Like a twist in the plot (its got me tied up in knots)

Life ain’t all that we thought it’d be
I ain’t no prince but you can be my queen
I suffer well life’s made sure of that
and I may lose my cool but I get it back
The thaw of the winter is the bloom of the spring
Its amazing what good things a bad thing can bring

The forecast called for a drop of rain
and then the flood came
The man I was is gone
Well good riddance and so long
Woman Woman won’t you help me please
You look through me with an ease
Tell me what do you see

Life ain’t all that we thought it’d be
I ain’t no prince but you can be my queen
I suffer well life’s made sure of that
and I may lose my cool but I get it back
The thaw of the winter is the bloom of the spring
Its amazing what good things a bad thing can bring

All this running never taught us what we’re worth
So press me down between your body and the earth
Till it hurts, till it hurts no more, no more

Life ain’t all that we thought it’d be
I ain’t no prince but you can be my queen
I suffer well life’s made sure of that
and I may lose my cool but I get it back
The thaw of the winter is the bloom of the spring
Its amazing what good things a bad thing can bring

To My Daughter

I was just a boy, barely seventeen
Good fortunate always smiled on me
I had philosophies on life and most of all love
But life leaves its mark on a man while love burns him up

I played a hand and came up a full house
And I made a stand like a mighty mighty mouse
This world is so big but it grows small with a child in your arms
My daughter is a fireball and I’m just the spark

We are taught to think and live on our own terms
But that there are mistruths is the first lesson I’ve learned
I’ve tried to believe in something so I could share with you a confidence
Thats theres reasons for everything but thats for you to decide

Your tiny hands are how I measure time
And the day will come when they fit into mine
It goes without saying that I am now and forever yours
You’re my greatest triumph in this world
Always my little girl

Wherever You Go

It took me a long time to write this. Its the feeling of being between two worlds. One you’re leaving, one you’re embracing. Yet there are moments when you feel stuck in the middle. Like you can’t go backwards or forwards. All you can do is observe this life you’re putting behind you, and experience a kind of numb, objective, clarity.

Lyrics:

I’m moments from home and it feels like a stone has hit my chest
Like a newborn I am fighting for a breath
This dawn is the wave that rushes my shore then rolls back
Revealing a clean slate and memories washed away

High up here everything gets so clear
Its over you know
Hope can taunt you and love, well it can haunt you
Wherever you go

My city sleeps beneath a blanket of clouds
Do not wake her, let her dream one last time for me
Oh how I wish words could mend all the same wounds that they make
But there are some things we only know how to break

High up here everything gets so clear
Its over you know
Hope can taunt you and love, well it can haunt you
Wherever you go

Over the hills, an ever changing landscape
A chance to be anything but me
No tears to shed, we’ve already formed the lakes
And the rivers, and the oceans that separate us
And liberate us

High up here everything gets so clear
Its over you know
Hope can taunt you and love, well it can haunt you
Wherever you go

Daniel Moody and That Arkansas Weather

I recently played a show backed by some extraordinarily talented musicians who call themselves That Arkansas Weather. The band, headed by Lucas Murray on guitar, can truly play just about anything, and play it well.

Lucas invited me to play on their set at the Afterthought in Hillcrest and it was pretty magical. We had only one short rehearsal, so I’m excited to see how well we mesh for a full set. This group is so tight and diverse, I’m thinking we’ll have to test our boundaries with some great covers mixed in with originals.

Here are the songs we played the other night. I’ve got a lot of videos on my channel, so let me know if you’d like to make a request for our next show. I just realized I’m wearing the same shirt in both of these and they were shot really far apart. From my weekly rotation, these were probably shot on a Wednesday.

These songs are also available for streaming or downloading on my live album here.

Green

I’ve come to think that you’re hard of hearing
The way you’re banging on that drum
Of all the things you could ask for nothing
Still you act like life owes you some

I may be green but I’ve seen some things
And I know, I know, I know I don’t know shit

Hear you’re hanging like you’re living in a painting
Saying this world needs more like us

Lets venture out into the great unknown
While you name everything
I’d ask you what you might think of me
But the price of your thoughts is way to steep

I may be green but I’ve seen some things
And I know, I know, I know I don’t know shit

Hear you’re hanging like you’re living in a painting
Saying this world needs more like us
You go and taste off everybody else’s plate but your own
You know you’re hard to trust

I know its lonely out here
Always on your own
This imitation game
Can even make hard to remember your name
But you’re calling me some pretty nasty things
You know thats not what a friend means

Hear you’re hanging like you’re living in a painting
Saying this world needs more like us
You go and taste off everybody else’s plate but your own
You know you’re hard to trust
